Why is Keyword Research the most crucial part of SEO and your Success?

If you've already got a website or blog setup, you must have heard about keywords and that they're good for you. However, if you're new to this field there's a lot that you need to learn about keywords before you actually think of proceeding with the development of your blog or site.

What are keywords?

It's not rocket science (Not that rocket science is hard), everyone would be able to understand what keywords are and you probably have a faint idea already. They're the terms people type into search engines in order to search for what they're looking.

When you write content for your website you would write it naturally in your own words. Of course there are people who would use the same words that you've typed out and your site would probably rank well and voila! visitors to your site.

However, most people tend to use similar phrases in order to find what they need online and this is what you need to know in order to incorporate this into your website or blog.  This is where keyword research kicks in.

What is keyword research?

Basically keyword research is the process of finding keywords or key-phrases that people would be searching for when they're looking for products or services that you offer.

One thing that can be said about keyword research is the fact that it's really difficult to find something that's searched for a lot and doesn't have a lot of competition already. And as you know, when you look up for something online there are millions of results that match your search phrase.

What should you do?

Of course it's not an easy process and therefore you need to come up with your own methods to optimize your website for search engine using the right keywords. Every single time before I write a blog post (Even this one) I take a look at the Google Adwords tool just to get a rough estimate on what people are actually looking for when they search online.

For this post I looked up "importance of keyword research" well, there were just 100 or so searches per month globally and the competition was massive, nevertheless I wanted to write about it and so here it is. After all, people who check out the other topics on the blog would probably be interested in it.

What I'm trying to say is that not all your pages need to be optimized for search engine traffic (i.e. don't bother about keywords all the time) as that's going to take away the fun from having a blog and you'd give up on it. So, a bit of keyword research, interest in the topic and the aim of giving your readers all the info they need should be your goal and you'd automatically rise in rankings on the SERP's (Search Engine Results) because:
  • People would be spending more time on your site and hence they'd probably share it. These days social sharing does have a tiny amount to play when it comes to being ranked.
  • You'd get back links from like-minded individuals who love what you've said.

Why Keyword Research is the most important aspect of SEO?

As you can read on this blog post about SEO for dummies you will see that there's a lot when it comes to Search Engine Optimization. However, personally I'd say without the right keywords you have nothing.

If at all you pick the wrong keywords you may happen to get a lot of traffic. But, the audience that you get may not be all that interested in what you have to offer and hence your business wouldn't be successful.

So, if you're going to be wasting time promoting keywords and phrases that only bring traffic your way you may need to re-think your entire plan.
